Should I see a lactation consultant before my baby is born?

Yes. Research shows that parents who get breastfeeding support before birth are more likely to meet their breastfeeding goals. Addressing your questions and any potential barriers ahead of time can make a meaningful difference for the whole family. The best support is early, preventive, and proactive, so meeting with a lactation consultant while you are pregnant is the best way to have a plan in place before your baby arrives.

Prenatal breastfeeding class

If you are pregnant and planning to breastfeed, our prenatal breastfeeding class is the best place to start. Take it as an online breastfeeding class from home, or in person at our Glenridge and Roswell locations in metro Atlanta. This 90-minute, evidence-based class is designed to help you reach your breastfeeding goals. In it you will learn:

  • How to support a strong milk supply
  • Techniques for latching your baby
  • How to tell whether your baby is getting enough
  • Simple ways to avoid common breastfeeding challenges
  • The role of a breast pump, and how to order one through your insurance

Offered virtually or in person at our Glenridge and Roswell locations.

Prenatal lactation consultation

A prenatal lactation consultation is a one-on-one visit for parents who want individualized support, have already taken the class, or already have breastfeeding or pumping experience. Your provider builds a proactive plan around your specific situation. The visit includes:

  • A detailed medical history to identify any risk factors for breastfeeding challenges
  • A proactive, personalized feeding plan
  • A breast exam
  • Hands-on guidance for hand expressing and collecting colostrum before birth, sometimes called colostrum harvesting
  • Breast pump flange sizing and help choosing the right pump
  • Instructions for ordering a pump through your insurance

Held at our Glenridge location or virtually.

Getting a breast pump through your insurance

Not sure which pump is right for you? We can help you get a breast pump through your insurance, which most plans cover at no cost, and choose the one that fits you best. Most parents order their pump during pregnancy, often in the third trimester, so it is ready when the baby arrives. You can also schedule a pumping support visit for a personalized recommendation, and book it in person if you want to see exactly how each pump works.

We have obsessively tested every pump we offer and stock a wide range, so you can get exactly what you need. We sweat the details so you do not have to. When you are ready, you can order through MilkCrate, our pump and supply site.

Frequently asked questions

When should I take a prenatal breastfeeding class?
Most parents take our prenatal breastfeeding class in the third trimester, though earlier is fine. It is the best starting point if you are pregnant and planning to breastfeed.
Do you offer an online prenatal breastfeeding class?
Yes. Our prenatal breastfeeding class is offered as an online, virtual class you can take from home, as well as in person at our Glenridge and Roswell locations in metro Atlanta. Both cover the same evidence-based material.
What is the difference between the class and a prenatal consultation?
The class is an evidence-based group overview of breastfeeding basics. A prenatal consultation is a one-on-one visit with an IBCLC for individualized planning, a breast exam, hands-on colostrum expression guidance, and pump fitting. Many parents start with the class and add a consultation if they want personalized support.
How do I collect colostrum before birth?
Collecting colostrum before birth, sometimes called colostrum harvesting or antenatal hand expression, means hand expressing small amounts of colostrum in late pregnancy and saving it for after delivery. Because it is not right for every pregnancy, we teach you the technique and confirm the timing with your provider during a prenatal lactation consultation.
How do I get a breast pump through my insurance while pregnant?
Most insurance plans cover a breast pump at no cost under the Affordable Care Act, and you can order yours during pregnancy. We help you use your benefits to choose and order the right pump through MilkCrate, our pump and supply site. Many parents order in the third trimester so it is ready when the baby arrives.
Do I need a referral for a prenatal lactation consultation?
No. You can book directly with us, with no referral required. After your visit we send a note to your OB, and once your baby arrives, to your pediatrician.
Where are prenatal services offered?
Prenatal classes are offered virtually and in person at our Glenridge and Roswell locations. Prenatal consultations are held at our Glenridge location or virtually.
Is prenatal lactation support covered by insurance?
In-office and virtual prenatal lactation consultations are covered as preventive care under most commercial plans and every Georgia Medicaid CMO. Our in-house billing team verifies your benefits before your visit, and full detail is on our insurance and billing page.
