Lactation consultant in Atlanta

An in-office lactation visit at Breastfeed Atlanta pairs you with an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) at our breastfeeding center for a full feeding evaluation, a weighted feed, and a personalized plan. Our team includes nurse practitioner IBCLCs with physician oversight, we accept most insurance and every Georgia Medicaid CMO, and no referral is needed.

What happens during an office visit?

Your visit is a comprehensive, one-on-one evaluation built around your specific situation. Your IBCLC takes a full feeding and medical history, observes a feed, and performs a weighted feed, weighing your baby before and after feeding to measure how much milk your baby transfers.

From there, we give you accurate, evidence-based information and build a personalized plan for you and your baby. When a follow-up makes sense, we almost always schedule it with you during the visit, so you leave with your next appointment already in place. After your visit, we send a report to your pediatrician and OB or midwife so your whole care team stays informed.

When to see a lactation consultant

There is no concern too big or too small. Families commonly book an office visit when:

  • You are feeling unsure or uneasy about breastfeeding
  • Your baby is having trouble latching
  • You are concerned about your milk supply, whether low or oversupply
  • You are experiencing pain while breastfeeding
  • Your baby has slow or low weight gain
  • You have been told you may need to supplement with formula
  • You have received conflicting advice and want a clear, personalized plan

Planning ahead before your baby arrives? Our prenatal services help you prepare for feeding before delivery.

Why families choose Breastfeed Atlanta

  • Every visit is with an IBCLC. Our credentialed clinical team includes nurse practitioner IBCLCs who can evaluate, treat, and prescribe when clinically appropriate, so medical and lactation care happen in one visit.
  • Physician oversight. Two board-certified Medical Directors oversee care, including a pediatrician who is one of only three physicians in Georgia with NABBLM-C board certification in breastfeeding and lactation medicine.

  • Insurance handled for you. We are in network with most commercial plans and every Georgia Medicaid CMO, and our in-house billing team verifies your benefits and files claims directly. Most families pay nothing out of pocket.
  • Care coordination. We send clinical notes to your pediatrician and OB after each visit, working as part of your perinatal care team.

Frequently asked questions

What is a lactation consultant?
A lactation consultant is a clinician with specialized training in breastfeeding and feeding support. The gold-standard credential is the IBCLC, an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, earned through hundreds of clinical hours and a board examination. At Breastfeed Atlanta, every visit is with an IBCLC, and many of our clinicians are also nurse practitioners who can evaluate, treat, and prescribe when clinically appropriate.
What happens during an in-office visit?
We review your history, observe your baby feed, evaluate latch and feeding mechanics, and do a weighted feed when appropriate, weighing your baby before and after feeding to measure milk transfer. You leave with a personalized, evidence-based plan, and when a follow-up makes sense we usually schedule it during your visit. We send a clinical note to your pediatrician and OB after each visit. Office visits often last around an hour.
What should I bring to my office visit?
Bring your baby (hungry if possible), your insurance card, a hospital discharge summary if you have one, and any feeding logs or notes you have been keeping. If you have been pumping, bring your pump for flange fitting.
Does insurance cover a lactation consultant?
Usually, yes. In-office lactation visits are covered as preventive care under most commercial plans, often with no out-of-pocket cost, and we accept every Georgia Medicaid CMO. Our in-house billing team verifies your benefits before your visit, and full detail is on our insurance and billing page.
Do I need a referral from my pediatrician or OB?
No. You can book directly with us, with no referral required. After your visit, we send a clinical note to your pediatrician and OB so everyone stays informed about your care.
Can my partner or support person come?
Absolutely. Many families bring their partner, a parent, or a friend. Our office spaces are comfortable for small groups.
Can I schedule an urgent appointment?
Call us at (404) 454-9715 to discuss urgent concerns like mastitis, severe latch pain, or sudden supply changes. We work to find the next available appointment for situations that need immediate clinical attention.
Can I be seen at home or virtually instead?
Yes. Along with in-office visits, we offer home visits across metro Atlanta and virtual visits, all with the same clinical team and covered by insurance the same way. You can choose whichever format fits your situation best.
