Lactation consultant home visits in Atlanta

An in-home lactation visit brings an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) to you for hands-on feeding support in your own home. Because our home-visit staffing is limited, we reserve them for families with a baby under two weeks old, inside the perimeter and most northern suburbs. If that is not you, the same clinical team sees you at our Centers or by telehealth.

Who can have a home visit?

Because our home-visit staffing is limited, we focus this service where it helps most, the early newborn days. Home visits are available for families with a baby under two weeks old, within Atlanta inside the perimeter and most of the northern suburbs.

If your baby is two weeks or older, or you are outside that area, you receive the same hands-on, one-on-one care at one of our Breastfeeding Centers or through a telehealth visit with the same clinical team.

What happens during a home visit?

Your IBCLC comes to you and works in the space where you actually feed your baby. The visit includes a full feeding and history review, a hands-on latch and feeding assessment, and a personalized plan you can use right away.

Home visits are staffed by our IBCLCs. If your situation may need a medical evaluation or a prescription, for example mastitis or persistent nipple and breast pain, our Center team includes nurse practitioner IBCLCs who can evaluate and prescribe in the same visit, so a Center appointment is often the better fit. After any visit, we send a note to your pediatrician and OB so your whole care team stays informed.

Does insurance cover a home visit?

We can bill most commercial insurance plans for in-home visits. Home visits are not billable to Medicaid. If your plan does not cover the visit, the cost is $300.

Office and telehealth visits are covered more broadly, including by every Georgia Medicaid CMO. If you have Medicaid, or you want to avoid a possible out-of-pocket cost, a Center visit or a virtual visit is the better fit. Our in-house billing team can verify your benefits either way. See our insurance and billing page for details.

Prefer a Center or virtual visit?

Most families see us at our Sandy Springs (Glenridge) or Roswell Breastfeeding Center, or by telehealth. You get the same clinical team, broader insurance coverage including Medicaid, and access to our full multi-specialty team, including nurse practitioner IBCLCs who can evaluate and prescribe when needed.

Frequently asked questions

Do you offer lactation consultant home visits in Atlanta?
Yes. Breastfeed Atlanta offers in-home lactation visits with an IBCLC, who comes to your house for a full feeding evaluation and hands-on support. Because staffing for home visits is limited, the service has the eligibility and area requirements described below. For families who do not qualify, we provide the same clinical care at our Centers and by telehealth.
Who qualifies for an in-home visit?
Home visits are reserved for families with a baby under two weeks old. This is when in-home support is most valuable, and it is where our limited home-visit staffing is focused. If your baby is two weeks or older, you are welcome at either of our Breastfeeding Centers or for a telehealth visit with the same clinical team.
What is your home-visit service area?
We provide home visits in Atlanta inside the perimeter and in most of the northern suburbs. If you are outside that area, a Center visit or a telehealth visit is the best way to be seen.
How much does a home visit cost, and does insurance cover it?
We can bill most commercial insurance plans for in-home visits. Home visits are not billable to Medicaid. If your plan does not cover the visit, the cost is $300. Office and telehealth visits are covered more broadly, including by every Georgia Medicaid CMO.
Can I get a home visit if my baby is older than two weeks?
Not at this time. Home visits are reserved for babies under two weeks old because of limited staffing. After two weeks, you receive the same hands-on, one-on-one care at our Sandy Springs or Roswell Center, or by telehealth.
Do you take Medicaid for home visits?
Home visits are not billable to Medicaid. If you have Medicaid coverage, a visit at one of our Centers or a telehealth visit is fully covered, because we are in network with every Georgia Medicaid CMO.

Not sure which visit fits?

If you have a newborn under two weeks old inside our service area, request a home visit and our team will confirm availability. Otherwise, booking a Center or virtual visit is the fastest way to be seen by the same clinical team.
