Breast Pump Rental

Rent a Hospital-Grade Breast Pump

Some pumping situations call for more than a personal pump. A hospital-grade pump, what clinicians increasingly describe as an effective, efficient, and comfortable double electric breast pump, is built for the kind of frequent, sustained milk removal that personal pumps weren't designed for. We rent both the Medela Symphony and the Ameda Platinum, two of the most clinically recommended pumps used in metro Atlanta hospitals.

Most commercial insurance plans cover a rental at no cost to you. Self-pay options are also available.

What "hospital-grade" actually means

Hospital-grade is not a regulated or protected term, and it gets defined in different ways depending on who's using it. At Breastfeed Atlanta, we use it to mean an FDA-approved multi-user breast pump that, in our years of clinical experience, is comfortable and effective for almost everyone.

The category is also less clear-cut than it used to be. Some pumps sold and priced as personal-use devices, such as the Spectra Gold and the Zomee H1, carry the same FDA multi-user approval. What matters most is not the label on the box; it's whether the pump removes milk effectively, efficiently, and comfortably for your situation. If you're not sure what you need, our IBCLCs can help you figure it out.

When to consider a hospital-grade pump

Hospital-grade pumps are a different category of device from a typical personal pump, designed for clinical situations where a personal pump may not be enough. Patients rent hospital-grade pumps from us for situations like:

  • A baby in the NICU who can't yet feed at the breast
  • Building or rebuilding milk supply when supply is at risk
  • Exclusive pumping for the long term
  • Feeding difficulties in the early days of life
  • Tongue tie or latch issues affecting milk transfer
  • Inducing lactation for adoptive or non-gestational parents
  • Returning to work and needing reliable, sustained output
  • A personal pump that isn't producing enough milk despite being properly fitted

If you're not sure whether a hospital-grade pump is right for your situation, call us at (404) 454-9715 or schedule a lactation consultation. We can evaluate your situation and recommend whether a hospital-grade pump would help.

The pumps we rent

Medela Symphony hospital-grade breast pump available to rent at Breastfeed Atlanta

Medela Symphony

The most widely used hospital-grade pump in metro Atlanta. It uses a pre-programmed two-phase expression sequence that is intended to mimic the rhythm of a baby's feeding and help trigger milk ejection. It's particularly useful in the early days of lactation, including when pumping colostrum or transitional milk. You may have used a Symphony in your hospital room; nearly every hospital in metro Atlanta uses it, including Northside, Wellstar, and DeKalb Medical Center.

Monthly self-pay rate: $80

Ameda Platinum hospital-grade breast pump available to rent at Breastfeed Atlanta

Ameda Platinum

The most technologically advanced pump in the Ameda lineup, and often our patients' favorite. It offers independently adjustable speed and suction controls plus a built-in timer, giving you fine control over your pumping experience. Many patients describe it as the most comfortable hospital-grade pumping experience available. You may have used an Ameda Platinum if you delivered at Piedmont Atlanta, Emory University Midtown, or Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

Monthly self-pay rate: $100

Both pumps are FDA-approved multi-user, hospital-grade devices. They're built for frequent, sustained use and are safe for multi-user environments thanks to their closed-system design.

Why early, frequent milk removal matters

In the first days and weeks, your milk supply is shaped largely by how often and how effectively milk is removed. Early, frequent, effective milk removal helps establish supply, and an effective, comfortable pump is one of the most useful tools when feeding at the breast isn't possible or isn't yet established.

If you've been told to start pumping, starting promptly and pumping regularly with a pump that works well for you makes a real difference. Our IBCLCs can help you build a pumping plan that fits your situation.

Insurance-covered rentals

Most commercial insurance plans cover a hospital-grade breast pump rental at no cost to you, and we're in network with most major plans. When you rent through insurance, your rental is paired with our MilkCrate program. MilkCrate provides the pump kit and accessories you need to actually use the pump, including tubing, valves, flanges in your fitted size, milk storage bags, and the consumables that wear out with regular pumping. MilkCrate is also covered by your insurance with no out-of-pocket cost.

A note on Medicaid and access

Georgia Medicaid CMOs do not currently cover hospital-grade pump rentals. They do cover personal-use double electric pumps. We never want anyone to feel they've been told they need something they can't get. For many situations, an effective, efficient, and comfortable double electric pump fully supports your goals, and our IBCLCs can help you choose the right one and build a plan around it.

Breastfeed Atlanta is committed to health equity. Whatever your coverage, our team will work with you to make sure you have what you need to protect your health and your baby's health. If you have Medicaid, reach out and we'll help you find the right path.

Self-pay rentals

If you're paying out of pocket, you can rent either pump directly without enrolling in MilkCrate.

  • Medela Symphony: $80 per month
  • Ameda Platinum: $100 per month

Self-pay rentals include the pump itself. The pump kit and accessories (tubing, valves, flanges, storage bags) are sold separately, through our MilkCrate program or another supplier.

Rental terms

  • Minimum rental period: One month, with no maximum, so you can keep the pump as long as you need it.
  • Refundable deposit: A $100 refundable deposit is charged at the start of the rental, with a credit card kept on file.
  • Monthly billing: Your card, or your insurance, is charged monthly until you return the pump.
  • Cleaning fee: A $50 cleaning fee applies if the pump is returned without being properly cleaned.
  • Returns: Return your pump to our Glenridge Breastfeeding Center using the 24/7 locker system, or ship it back. Once we receive and inspect the pump, your deposit is refunded.

Connected care

Frequently asked questions about pump rentals

Which pump should I rent?
For most patients, either pump works well. What matters most is that your pump removes milk effectively, efficiently, and comfortably. The Symphony is the most widely used hospital-grade pump in the region. The Platinum offers independently adjustable controls and is often described as more comfortable. If you used a specific pump in the hospital and liked it, that's often a good guide. If you have a clinical preference, our team can help you decide.
Does insurance cover the rental?
Most commercial insurance plans cover hospital-grade pump rental at no cost when there's documented medical necessity. Georgia Medicaid CMOs do not currently cover hospital-grade rentals, though they do cover personal-use pumps. We verify your benefits in advance so you know what to expect.
What's included in the rental?
The rental includes the pump itself. For insurance-covered rentals, the pump kit and accessories you need (tubing, valves, flanges, storage bags) come through our MilkCrate program. For self-pay rentals, kits and accessories are purchased separately. One tip if you're reading this from a hospital room: the pump kit you were given there is yours to keep, so take it home, and ask our team whether it works with your rental.
Where do I pick up and return the pump?
Pickup and return are handled at our Glenridge Breastfeeding Center in Sandy Springs. Our 24/7 locker system means you can pick up or drop off at any hour, with no need to match our staffed hours. We aren't able to offer pump pickup or return at our Roswell location.
Can the pump be shipped to me?
Yes. We ship pumps for a flat $50 fee that includes return shipping. Our team can walk you through shipping arrangements during setup.
Can I send someone to pick up the pump for me?
Absolutely. Many of our patients send a family member or an Uber to handle pickup at Glenridge, and our 24/7 lockers make this easy. Just let us know during scheduling.
What if my insurance doesn't cover the rental?
We offer self-pay rates of $80 per month for the Medela Symphony and $100 per month for the Ameda Platinum, with no additional fees beyond the refundable deposit and, if applicable, the cleaning fee on return. And coverage isn't the whole story: even if a rental isn't covered, our IBCLCs can help you choose an effective, efficient, and comfortable double electric pump and build a plan to support your milk supply.
How do I return the pump?
Return your pump to our Glenridge Breastfeeding Center using the 24/7 locker system, or ship it back. Clean the pump first to avoid the $50 cleaning fee. Once we receive and inspect it, your $100 deposit is refunded.
