Breastfeed Atlanta to host Cobb’s official event
For the first year, Breastfeed Atlanta will team up with WIC (Women, Infant & Children) from Cobb/Douglas to host Cobb’s official event for The Global Big Latch On.
Expecting moms and families with infants will gather to breastfeed and offer peer support to each other. Breastfeed Atlanta and WIC say the event’s goal is to help normalize breastfeeding and showcase the support available to breastfeeding families so they can be successful.
“While support for breastfeeding mothers has come a long way and we’re very fortunate in Atlanta, there’s always more work to be done,” said Christie Coursey, IBLCE, director of clinical lactation services at Breastfeed Atlanta.
Officials from both organizations say that breastfeeding is not an accepted practice everywhere. While breastfeeding is proven to lower sudden infant death syndrome, build babies’ immunities for a healthy life and lower mothers’ risk for breast cancer and Type 2 diabetes, many people aren’t aware of the health benefits.
Some companies don’t offer support for working moms to continue to breastfeed after returning to work. Other companies make headlines for asking women not to breastfeed in public.
“As a community, we need to truly normalize breastfeeding,” Coursey said.
The Global Big Latch On event in Cobb County will be hosted at Cobb/Douglas Health Department on Friday, August 3 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. On-site parking is available at 1738 County Services Pkwy, Marietta. The event will include:

Swag bags for first 50 attendees with Ameda breast pump supplies and other baby goods
